FUNDRAISING, FUN AND FINE ALES
During the summer two of our newer supporters, Jason
and Keely Scanlon decided to combine a love of walking with
some serious fundraising by doing the 12 Inns Walk in the Yorkshire
Dales.
Their interest in and involvement with MSAVLC grew following a
chance encounter in a bag shop in Hanoi during our last visit to Vietnam
in the spring of 2009. Jason and I had a chat whilst Keely and Sheila
inspected every one of the bags in the shop, or so it seemed!
We talked about our reasons for being in Vietnam and about the charity
and our work. When the need for yet another handbag had been satisfied
we went our separate ways, having exchanged e-mail addresses and
promises to keep in touch.
At this point chance holiday meetings would normally have ended,
but not with Jason and Keely. We have exchanged e-mails over the past
eighteen months and they have been added to our growing list of supporters
who receive their copy of the News Bulletin electronically.
In the early summer Jason contacted me to tell me that the two of
them were intending to do the Inns Walk and would we like to be the
beneficiary of the sponsorship money they raised. Our response was an eager
“Yes please”.
As the name suggests the walk is done in stages punctuated by
obligatory visits to the inns along the way.
I am told by Jason and Keely that the intake of local ales was purely to
replace lost liquid and that no pleasure was taken from the drinking itself!
Their little stroll through some of the most beautiful scenery in Britain
took place in September and raised over £600, which, at their request will
be earmarked to support the Helping Hands project in Cambodia.
Our grateful thanks are due to the Scanlons and their sponsors for their
efforts and compassion.                                                        Peter Lacy
