Medical and Scientific Aid for Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia (MSAVLC) was set up in 1965 (as the Medical Aid Committee for Vietnam) and has operated since 1980 with only volunteer helpers. an enabling organisation, providing medicines and medical equipment so that Doctors and Nurses can carry out the work that they are qualified and eager to do. The emphasis is on support for grass-roots and primary health care projects, generally in response to specific requests. Our support meets a wide range of needs but mostly those of Children. It includes repair of hare lip and cleft palate, cataract operations, treatment and prevention of trachoma , training courses in modern methods for “traditional” midwives, provision of equipment for early diagnosis and treatment of congenital abnormalities due to toxic chemicals (predominantly Agent Orange), treatment of TB in the community, and the provision of hearing aids for children.

 Breakfast Programme, Helping Hands Cambodia

MSAVLC has recently approved a £3,300 grant to support a breakfast programme run by "Helping Hands Cambodia" an NGO based in Siem Reap, Cambodia's poorest province. Helping Hands set up their Breakfast programme at the school because teachers became aware that 80% of the children were coming to school without having breakfast, affecting their abilty to concentrate and general health. Helping Hands uses the World Food Programme breakfast menu which gives basic nutrition at an estimated cost of 643 real per child (less than 10p). Each child receives a bowl containing 100 grams of rice, 25 grams of fish, 20 grams of green vegetables, oil and salt.
