BRITISH FRIENDSHIP HOSPITAL, KY ANH 26th March 2011
Dr. Lieu welcomed us to the hospital and introduced her staff to us. She said that she was sad that Dr. Madeleine Sharp was not with us this time, and that they also fondly remembered Margaret Methley. She gave thanks to us and to all the people who have never come to Vietnam but still help, not only with donations, but with their concern for such a small place on the other side of the world.
We toured the hospital and saw the new building work in progress which will take up to two years to finish. We were told that more patients are now choosing to come to this hospital for their care. In the past many would have gone to Ha Tinh Hospital or Hanoi. This was partly due to the help given by MSAVLC in providing new equipment for the hospital. The Ministry of Health regulates for health and hygiene, infection is minimal and cross-infection rare. If infections do happen, an isolation ward is available. Hand-cleansing liquid is supplied and soap and water is used on hands between patients. The garbage is sorted into infectious and non-infectious before disposal.
We visited the Paediatric ward and chatted to the mothers and tiny babies in the Respiratory Ward. One little lad was thought to be affected by Agent Orange and had a hare lip and cleft palate. We saw the paediatric equipment that MSAVLC had bought but were told that more was always needed!
We saw the new bed donated by Mr. Hardy.
As usual the visit was a delight and the staff friendly and helpful.
