New Hope School,  Phnom Penh      10th March 2011
Purpose of visit: To discuss the establishment of a First Aid facility to be run by the New Hope Church
People met: Cheng Rostitus, his adopted son Peter and staff members
Since our last visit they have moved premises back to the original site close to the former municipal dump. This site has more classrooms and ample space to house a first aid station. Titus told us that the poverty had increased since the dump was moved to a new site with people having to travel 15 kilometers to work on the new dump. There are still people scavenging on the old dump but making very little money, the only real hope for the children is for them to get some education. During our visit in 2009 we witnessed the need for first aid, particularly to hands and feet. Proper attention to the many cuts and grazes turn septic unless treated quickly.
Titus outlined his plans to have eight members of staff, from the school and from the orphanage in Poi Pet, trained as “first aiders”. He produced a schedule and costings for the training and also an estimate of the monthly cost of consumables for the project. Titus has obviously given a great deal of thought to the establishment of the project and it’s sustainability, he feels that by training eight members of staff he will be able to ensure that there is always someone available to treat patients.
