DDSP is a Cambodian NGO launched in January 2003. It is one of the few rural Cambodian organisations in the country providing community services to disabled people. DDSP works in Pursat, a poor rural province in central Cambodia, which has a lack of NGOs or other initiatives aimed at disabled people.
Its objectives are to enable disabled people to access services to enable them to improve their quality of life, to raise awareness among communities about disabled people’s rights and opportunities, and to help other service providers in Pursat to include disabled people on their activities.
Some of DDSP’s projects include:
Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR)
DDSP’s selection process for target villages are those which are poor, remote, lack basic services and projects from other NGO’s, and have a large number of disabled people. The CBR project focus is in 4 main areas:
- Basic needs – disabled people’s health, hygiene, nutrition, housing and emergency needs.
- Rehabilitation needs – e.g. home-based therapy and rehabilitation equipment, and need for referral to rehabilitation services outside of the community.
- Social needs - e.g. psycho-social counselling, confidence and empowerment, education and vocational training.
- Economic needs – e.g. access to micro-credit and capital for income generation.
Paraplegic/Quadriplegic Rehabilitation (PQR)
These are not common disabilities but are among the most severe. The focus is similar to the CBR project.
Mlob Mith Komar (MMK) meaning “Children’s Friends Shade”
Launched in 2004 for children with severe disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy. Such children are the most forgotten in society –they often have multiple disabilities, and are often completely dependant on their carers (usually their mothers). MMK provides them with rehabilitation through physiotherapy and access to wheel chairs. A room at Pursat Hospital has been donated to the project, allowing children to attend. As well as centre-based activities staff carry out home follow up, to provide on-going training and encouragement to carers and where necessary to provide emergency support and help with health care and nutrition.

MSAVLC would like to support DDSP, but unless we receive funds we will be unable to do so – projects like this may cease to exist if we do not receive financial help.
